Human Factors Hub

Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has launched the Human Factors Hub with the aim of embedding human factors across all facets of the organisation, including learning, patient safety investigations, workforce development and improvement programmes.

What is Human Factors?

The principles of Human Factors equip NHS staff to be flexible and resilient in delivering high quality care for patient safety. This includes understanding the connection between staff, equipment, and the surroundings. By understanding Human Factors, we can reduce human error and improve patient safety.

This short video created by NHS England provides a summary of how Human Factors plays a crucial and integral role within healthcare:

How is Human Factors being used?

As part of the Human Factors Hub, we have three work-streams initially focusing on the following areas:

  • Emergency Department
  • Maternity
  • Theatres

For each of the work streams, a Human Factors approach is being used to understand why patient safety incidents occur in the first instance. With this knowledge and understanding, improvements can be identified and put into action to increase patient safety and improve patient and staff experience.

Specific Human Factors training for each of the workstreams is currently being developed. Watch this space for further updates!
