Speech and Language Therapy Assistant

THE WORKING DAY

You will help people who have difficulties such as: producing and using speech, understanding/using language, feeding, chewing or swallowing, a stammer. In many cases, you’ll support the patient’s carers too.

DOES THIS SOUND LIKE ME?

You will need to be:

  • sensitive and understanding
  • enjoy using language and communication to help people
  • able to explain treatment to patients
  • patient and able to remain calm in stressful situations
  • work well with others of all ages and backgrounds
  • use your initiative
  • enjoy working alone or part of a team

WHAT'S NEXT?

There are no set entry requirements but you will usually need good literacy and numeracy skills, some employers may ask for GCSEs or equivalent. You may also need a qualification in healthcare or Health and Social Care. Relevant subjects include a Level 2 Certificate in Work Preparation for Health and Social Care, Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care and Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care. Most Health and Social Care courses include work placements so this could be a good way of getting experience.
