What NHS career would suit you?

Director of Finance

THE WORKING DAY

You’re based at Alderson House, the trust HQ at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, managing the budget for the trust to make sure money is spent correctly.

You start at 9am, gathering and interpreting financial data so you can write a report for your Chief Executive on expenditure over the last six months. Next, you meet the head of estates management and a building contractor to discuss the renovation of some of the older buildings at Hull Royal Infirmary. You’re happy that the projects are being on target and on budget and authorise payments for contractors.

You end the day with a meeting with your team to discuss whether changes should be made to the system that ensures vital NHS staff are paid on time very month. It’s very rewarding to know your decisions and negotiations shape the direction of healthcare in your area.

DOES THIS SOUND LIKE ME?

You enjoy analysing facts and figures and do well at maths. You’re a great communicator, like negotiating deals and are good at leading others.

WHAT'S NEXT?

You’ll usually need five 9-4 (A*-C) grade GCSEs (or the equivalent), so you can apply for at least two A-Levels (or the equivalent) at college or 6th form.

Gaining at least two A-Levels (or equivalent level 3 qualifications) is a good idea, in order to take a degree — preferably in business management, accounting or similar, relevant subject.
