What NHS career would suit you?

Decontamination Sciences Technician

THE WORKING DAY

You work at the Sterile Services Unit at Harrow Street in West Hull. Working in a team, you are responsible for providing sterilised equipment to hospital theatres and departments.

You start at 9am when your first task is to carefully and methodically dismantle sophisticated medical equipment, thoroughly cleaning and sterilising each piece. You must follow a set cleaning procedure to ensure you meet government standards for hygiene.

After sterilisation, you check each piece under a microscope to ensure all germs have been removed before putting everything together again. You enjoy being a vital part of the healthcare system and like the opportunities for training and career advancement that come with this role.

You’re currently working towards a qualification in decontamination and hope one day to train as a manager.

DOES THIS SOUND LIKE ME?

You’re patient and hard-working, pay attention to detail and enjoy following rules and set procedures. You like being part of a team and have good communication skills.

WHAT'S NEXT?

You’ll usually need GCSE (or the equivalent) passes in maths, English and a science subject. You will receive training on the job.

A-Levels aren’t essential for this role, as on the job training is offered. An entry-level role offers the chance to work towards a qualification awarded by the Institute of Decontamination Sciences.
