On 14 February 2023, we launched the Rainbow Badge project at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. This involved a review of our key policies, surveys of our patients, service users, staff, students, volunteers and service managers, and a workforce assessment.
We ran a survey focusing on experiences of patients in terms of LGBTQIA+ inclusivity, e.g. whether staff have made assumptions, whether pronouns have been used or encouraged, and whether any LGBTQIA+ discriminatory behaviour or language has been witnessed.
We also ran a survey for staff to ask how comfortable they are discussing LGBTQIA+ topics with patients and colleagues. We asked what training they have had, or would like to have, and whether they feel they have adequate support from the trust. We also asked if they had witnessed any form of LGBTQIA+ discrimination within the trust.
How can I get my own Rainbow Badge?
If you work at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, you are invited to make an NHS Rainbow Badge Pledge.
Simple visible symbols, such as the NHS Rainbow Badge, can make a big difference for those unsure of both themselves, and of the reception they will receive if they disclose their sexuality and/or gender identity.
