This website is run by Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. It is designed to be used by as many people as possible. The text should be clear and simple to understand. You should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is:

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • you cannot modify the line height or spacing of text on older pages
  • the readability of older pages is not ideal
  • most older PDF documents are not fully accessible to screen reader software
  • live video streams do not have captions
  • the search box on some of our older pages does not have discernible text and we are awaiting technical support to resolve this (9 August 2023)
  • the Trust Strategy is currently undergoing redevelopment as a Group Strategy and will be published in an accessible format by 1 April 2025

Enforcement procedure

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is responsible for enforcing the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 (the ‘accessibility regulations’). If you’re not happy with how we respond to your complaint, contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS).

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances and exemptions listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

Certain PDF documents

Some web pages and documents which are essential to our operation, such as regulations and guidance which need to be followed by clinical staff, are currently contained in non-accessible PDF documents. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (non-text content).

We plan to replace all PDFs with accessible HTML versions by 31 December 2025.

Disproportionate burden

Board papers and minutes that detail the discussions and actions of the Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust are contained within PDF documents that are sometimes redacted and not accessible to assistive technologies. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criteria 1.1.1 (non-text content), 1.3.1 (info and relationships) and 1.3.2 (meaningful sequence).

We will not be making accessible existing documents relating to the Trust Board as we believe doing so would be too burdensome. We will evaluate whether it is possible to make future board documents accessible to assistive technologies, however this will take some time due to the number of contributors and their lack of knowledge about accessibility requirements. We will work with the Director of Corporate Affairs and aim to be publishing accessible board papers by December 2024.

We completed a Disproportionate Burden Assessment on 19 September 2023.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services. For example, we do not plan to fix our archive of board papers.

Live video

We do not plan to add captions to live video streams because live video is exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We are working on providing an accessibility roadmap showing how and when we plan to improve accessibility on this website.

We are also in the process of setting up an accessibility website testing group, made up of staff and patients.

We plan to have both of these in place by 1 April 2025.

Timescales

  • 1 April 2025 – The date by which we intend to have a full websites strategy in place, including a plan of action in place to tackle all outstanding accessibility issues (including those mentioned in our Disproportionate Burden Assessment)
  • 31 December 2025 – The date by which we intend for our website to be 100% WCAG AA compliant with no exceptions.
